'Tis the Season for a Few of My Favorite Things

I’d be lying if I said I was a big holiday person. Maybe it’s because my birthday falls right before Christmas and I’ve always felt slightly shafted. Maybe it’s because as a child of divorce, you realize two Christmases are not a good thing; has anyone seen the movie Four Christmases? It’s not good as a child or an adult!

When my grandfather passed a few years back, the holidays became even less important to me. Family meals became take out or dine out. My grandmother stopped decorating, and I even followed suit on year after deciding there was really no point in a Christmas tree.

I’m happy to say that am in full holiday cheer mode this year, more than ever before, and am ready for a merry and bright season with my family and friends. And on that note, I wanted to share a few of my favorite things to get me in the mood to celebrate the season!

My Favorite Things

My Favorite Things by kristin-hodnett featuring philosophy

This time of year is all about indulging all the senses to create memories and traditions that will last a lifetime.

My two favorite Christmas music – Colbie Caillat and Sheryl Crow (with an honorable mention to Mariah Carey and the Glee version of Last Christmas).

I know the holidays are here when the red cups come out at Starbucks and I can start sipping (or chugging) my favorite chai eggnog latte. It also means it’s time for Jamestown Cellars Settlers Spiced Wine, delicious in a crock pot with a little apple cider, a few cinnamon sticks and some orange slices.

All of my ornaments match and have special meaning. The eiffel tower ornament is just like one given to me by my favorite wedding planner after our Paris-themed wedding, and a co-worker started my White House Ornament collection a few years ago.

Scents are a huge part of the season, so I love using holiday scented bath and body products and lighting candles all over the house.

Speaking of the house, I like for both me and it to look the part, though not in a traditional way. Think metallic stockings, bright and cozy slippers, fur, sequins and feathers! Of course, all coordinated.

And who doesn’t love a little blue box any time of year?
