“Struck by Lightning”

“Struck by Lightning” which was directed by Brian Dannelly and written by and starring Chris Colfer is about Carson Phillips, a smart and ambitious teen who has only one goal—to become the editor of “The New Yorker” and to be the youngest person published by The New York Times, win the Nobel Prize for literature and the Pulitzer Prize for journalism. However, he must first get out of his town of Clover and that means being accepted to Northwestern University. He knows what he wants and will do what it takes to get it.
Listening to the advice of his school counselor, he decides to start a literary magazine even though the school newspaper of which he is editor is a dismal failure. No one wants to contribute so Carson decides to force them into contributing by blackmailing them with their dirty secrets. He has the help of his best and only friend, Malerie (Angela Kinsey). They mark a cheerleader, a know-it-all who has a dirty side and a few gay guys who are in the closet.
The movie opens fast—Carson is hit with a lightning bolt in the school parking lot and then goes on to explain his funeral. We go back to his childhood and see him raised by his single mom. We move forward to high school, to Carson’s senior year and we see that he is one of the most unpopular students.
What could have been such a good movie turns into a mediocre one. We see Carson as a smart kid but we cannot stand him. His obnoxiousness makes him barely palatable. I happen to love Chris Colfer on “Glee” but most definitely do not like him here. For one who has done so much for gay kinds I do not like to see him laughing and sneering at them and blackmailing them. Save your money and your time and wait for “Glee” or watch the DVDs.
