Last night’s season premiere of The Vampire Diaries was all about grief and how each of the main characters on the show is dealing (or not dealing) with the deaths of Bonnie and Damon from the season five finale. However, while the majority of “I’ll Remember” focused on drug using Elena, lonely, brooding Stefan, or drunken, video game-playing Jeremy, the episode did also provide us with a pretty big twist in its final scene (because of course it did—every episode of The Vampire Diaries has to end with a twist).
After Elena asked Alaric to compel her to forget about ever meeting or falling in love with Damon (which, although it’s a completely idiotic idea that I hope Alaric doesn’t go through with, would have been a strong way to end the episode itself), the episode’s final scene took us to a completely new setting, as we saw Damon (in a flannel shirt!) cooking pancakes for himself and Bonnie. The two of them seemed relatively happy, but it felt strange, very different from the rest of the show, which left viewers (like myself) asking one question: where exactly are Damon and Bonnie? Well, thanks to the promo for next week’s Vampire Diaries, plus some intel on another upcoming episode, I think we can piece it together.
As it says in the video below, it appears that Damon and Bonnie are somehow “lost in time,” stuck in May 1994, continuously living the same day over and over again Groundhog Day-style. Additionally, according to TVLine, episode four of this season will feature 1990s Damon and Stefan flashbacks, and this episode will reportedly “help tie together a bunch of storylines.”
With this puzzle most likely solved and the promise of some more information on the way, I’m still left wondering how Damon and Bonnie ended up back in time and if and how they will be able to leave and return back to present day. It looks like only time will tell (pun intended), but one thing’s for sure: this new twist has got me very interested in what’s coming next during season six of The Vampire Diaries.
