Hollywood, CA, United States (4E) – Ready to see Archie and the gang in live action? Yup, “Riverdale,” based on the beloved Archie Comics, is in the works at FOX. Warner Bros. Television is producing, alongside Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Greg Berlanti of Berlanti Productions (“Arrow,” “The Flash”).
Expect the complete gang to show up, with their respective issues intact. “Carrot top” Archie Andrews’ love triangle with sweet, blonde Betty Cooper and spoiled socialite brunette Veronica Lodge; Archie’s rival Reggie Mantle and cheeseburger-addict slacker Jughead Jones, Josie and the Pussycats, and the gay character Kevin Keller.
However, “Riverdale,” the title of which is based on the fictional town of the gang in the classic comics, won’t be your expected wholesome series. The comic world of Archie will be revamped into a present-day dark and surreal drama. Deadline reports that the live action TV series “offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends, exploring the surreality of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.”
Apart from executive producing, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will also write the series. Aguirre-Sacasa, a well-known playwright, screenwriter and comic book writer, is known for writing the screenplay for “Carrie” and “The Town That Dreaded Sundown,” and also musical adaptation of “American Psycho” for Broadway.
According to Deadline both Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti have “extensive backgrounds in small town/coming-of-age TV dramas with ‘Dawson’s Creek’ and ‘Jack & Bobby’ (Berlanti) and ‘Glee’ and ‘Looking’ (Aguirre-Sacasa).”
