Executives at Apple are sure to be rubbing their hands with glee at the news that their two new iPhones – the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus – had a bumper first weekend on sale.
Apple has said that it sold more than 10 million units of its new handsets over the launch weekend, up from the nine million it sold last year in the first weekend of sales for the previous generation of iPhones (the 5C and 5S).
“Sales of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6Plus have surpassed our expectations for the launch weekend and we could not be happier,” Apple chief executive Tim Cook said in a statement.
“We want to thank our clients who had made this the best release ever.”
The newest Apple smartphones are on sale in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.
The company says the new iPhones will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year – except for China, due to regulatory delays.
The iPhone is still Apple’s biggest money-maker, accounting for about 70 percent of the tech giant’s profits.
In the UK, an unlocked iPhone 6 starts at £539, and the iPhone 6 Plus at £619.
