Glee Recap 05/06/14 - 'Old Dog, New Tricks' - HaveUHeard

Old Dog, New Tricks

In the midst of all the ridiculous rumors and speculation about whether or not Naya Rivera got fired, as well as the sad fact that the Season 5 finale is next week (where did the time go??), hopefully you didn’t miss one very important fact about tonight’s episode of GLEE: it was written by Chris Colfer! Obviously, “Old Dog, New Tricks” was fairly Kurt-centric, but it also featured hilarious Rachel shenanigans and a high profile guest star. So let’s recap what went down in this doggone episode:

When the Broadway blogs start flooding with news that Ms. Rachel Berry, star of Funny Girl is a diva who can’t be trusted after she called in sick to a performance to go to a television audition, she’s in desperate need of some reputation rehab, stat. Cue Santana, who has apparently found her calling: publicist to the stars. Auntie Snixx comes up with a plan to Olivia Pope the situation. (For those of you who aren’t gladiators, that means to “fix” it.)

Santana decides that Rachel needs a cause to champion, and when Rachel sees a horrid woman stuffing a dog into a purse, she finds it. (Because it’s sooo hard to get people behind a cause like adorable puppies.) And thus Broadway Bitches is born. Santana plans a gala-slash-fundraiser-slash-adoption-center at which she, Rachel, and Mercedes will perform together. When Kurt asks if he can join in, he’s shunned from the girl’s-only club.

Thank goodness that he found a new friend: Maggie Banks, played by none other than June Squibb! You may recognize Ms. Squibb from her Oscar-nominated performance in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska or from her turn as Hannah’s grandmother on HBO’s Girls. Maggie has escaped from her home for retired performers to post fliers for their upcoming production of “Peter Pan” when she runs into Kurt. They bond: he laughs at her funny old person-ness, she affectionately calls him “doughboy.” It’s all very cute.

Next: Alright, alright, alright.
