Last night, HBO aired the second episode of Game of Thrones season 4 titled The Lion and the Rose which managed to generate a lot of discussion last night on social media. People are still talking about the events that took place on last night’s episode of Game of Thrones so I thought it would be worth discussing here on Pink is the new Blog today. In an effort to NOT SPOIL the episode for those of you who have yet to watch The Lion and the Rose, I will keep all storyline discussion behind the cut below. Needless to say for those of you familiar with Game of Thrones, major events can take place at anytime in this show. Season 4 of GoT just started a week ago and already, we are off and running with game-changing developments. Click below to see a series of brilliant animated gifs that showcase a pivotal scene from last night’s episode of Game of Thrones and let’s talk about what happened, shall we?
I have been waiting for last night’s episode to air for over a year now. When I read the George R.R. Martin novel A Storm of Swords which features events that take place on seasons 3 and 4 of the GoT TV series, I couldn’t actually believe what I was reading. After the shock and horror of The Red Wedding that was featured last season on GoT, I was unprepared to read the events that took place during The Purple Wedding — which was featured on last night’s ep of the series. The Lion and the Rose started out brutally enough with the hunting and killing of a seemingly innocent girl at the hands (and rabid dogs) of Ramsay Snow. We then see just how broken Theon Greyjoy is now that he has been tortured into submission as Ramsay‘s plaything Reek. We check in on Bran & Jojen Stark, Meera and Hodor as they continue to hide out in search of Jon Snow and we also check in on how things are going with Stannis Baratheon in his neck of the Westeros woods. All of this will be important to the overall storyline down the line but it really served as a distraction for the main event of last night’s episode. For much of the episode, we see the wedding events surrounding the marriage of King Joffrey to Margery Tyrell. During the reception, Joffrey shows himself to be the raging bratty asshole that he has always been — particularly in his cruelty to his uncle Tyrion — and then, we everyone least suspects it … he was poisoned and killed. Yep, Joffery was killed off on last night’s episode of Game of Thrones … and you could almost hear the collective cheering of the world as soon as it happened. Joffery choked to death after he was poisoned after drinking a cup of wine and eating a piece of pie, turning purple as he gasped for breath and then collapsed and died (hence, The Purple Wedding). Video of the scene is unavailable but these animated gifs do a pretty good job of setting the scene:
At this point, it’s not clear how exactly Joffery was murdered nor who is responsible for the poisoning. It is immediately assumed by Joffrey‘s mother Cersei that he was poisoned with wine by Tyrion, the imp but it should be noted that Joffrey also scarfed down a few bites of wedding pie before he died … and anyone could’ve poisoned the pie. Joffrey‘s death scene makes sure to focus on a few different characters, essentially letting the audience know that any one of them could’ve been responsible for Joffrey‘s death. The fourth season of Game of Thrones is so damn good already, how can it possibly improve from here? Just keep watching and see. Did you watch last night’s episode of GoT? Did you scream with utter glee when Joffrey choked to death in front of your eyes? What did you think of last night’s episode, The Lion and the Rose? While you think on it, here’s audio of Sigur Rós performing everyone’s favorite GoT wedding song The Rains of Castamere:
