Will success spoil Mr. Schuester? • A bona fide national star, Matthew Morrison of “Glee,” opened Friday night’s fight between the Cards and the Giants. His rendition of the national anthem, simple and clear, was the best of the three nights.
The Emmy-winning actor/entertainer, who plays top teacher Will Schuester in the hit series, was also a big hit behind the scenes and held up his after-anthem exit to pose for several pics with fans, including the Redbird cheerleaders.
When asked what his rooting interest was in Game 5, Morrison laughed and replied, “Are the Mets playing tonight?”
(No Matt. They didn’t make the playoffs.)
‘Shooter’ scores for teacher pals • The most dependable arm on the STL Cardinals — batting practice pitcher Dennis “Shooter” Schutzenhofer — came through for two teaching pals.
Katy Stinson and Kristin DeMond, both of Belleville, were likely the first non-media non-related fans to show up Friday. The two Belleville West High teachers were colleagues of Schutzenhofer before he retired from the Belleville district. He also scored them a couple of batting-pratice balls.
And the women prepared wisely for the possible clinching NLCS game.
“We laid down a good base, hamburgers at Llewelyn’s,” DeMond said, adding this is their first playoff game this year. “I had tickets to Wednesday’s game, but I had to get rid of them. We had a parent-teacher conference.”
Dearly beloved Birds • Needless to say, the wedding planners were not taking the Cardinals’ postseason chances into account when they started orchestrating nuptials many months ago.
But the fact that the Michael Pelchman-Chelsea Donovan wedding fell on the day the Redbirds could move onto the World Series was fine with the just-wed Fenton couple.
“This is fabulous. What I want most of all is for the Cardinals to bring this one home tonight and get to the Series,” said the bride. “And of course I want to have a beautiful, happy marriage.”
Yeah, well, there’s that.
Running with the (photo) devil • “Film runners” make $75 a game, shuttling film, disc, data cards and other image-carrying mojos between the photographers on the field and the editors and processors tucked away underneath the box seats.
So maybe you don’t quit your day job, but a little cash and seats to Cardinals’ playoff games isn’t a bad deal.
Well scratch the ‘seat” part, for the several dozen runners stand the entire time. But before the game, you can always count on the runners going through their strenuous preparations: sitting.
“We still get to see a lot of game,” said Bob Boes of Manchester, who has done every NLCS and World Series here since 1996.
Boes found out about the gig years ago from a photographer friend, while Jennifer Rose of west St. Louis County is a photographer herself and signed up in time to work last year’s All-Star Game. Officially, the runners work for Major League Baseball.
“We run up to the photographers, ask them if they have anything, then we run it back to the media room and then come right back,” Rose said. “We run for anybody who’s here shooting.”
Parking price pop up • Friday night, the STL Cards had a chance to clinch a berth in a second consecutive World Series for the first time since 1967-68, and also avenge a loss to the SF Giants in the 2002 NLCS.
Who didn’t want to be downtown for that?
And what parking lot owner didn’t know that?
An informal perusal of lots around Busch Stadium show that prices increased, literally, overnight. A popular lot southwest of the ballpark had been charging $25. But not Friday, when the signs were changed out to reflect a higher price: $30. Darn close to the cost of a big yellow taxi.
