Ryan Murphy is not the most modest man in the world, so it would be very easy to dismiss him saying that “The Break Up” is the best episode “Glee” has ever done as another hyperbolic brag. But wow — the beautiful, sad, emotional hour really is the best episode “Glee” has ever done, with some amazing performances from Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Darren Criss, Naya Rivera and Chris Colfer in particular.
By the end of the episode, two fan-favorite couples had split, one couple nobody really cared about was over, and two more fan-favorite couples were on the verge of breaking up. Honestly, the only way we could’ve cried harder is if they only played the Google commercial with the dad and the daughter in college during the breaks.

Let’s go through the breakups pair by pair:
Finchel
Obviously Finn and Rachel have been on the rocks ever since Finn shipped his fiance out to New York City, enlisting in the Army and not talking to anyone for months and months. Rachel did kiss Brody, but just because that happened doesn’t mean she wasn’t allowed to be mad at the way Finn treated her. Their breakup seemed realistic and devastating for both of them — kind of like that one scene in “Cruel Intentions” with Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe. Hm, wonder if being a couple in real life automatically makes on-screen breakups that much more emotionally fraught? This seemed like the most inevitable split of the episode, considering what’s happened between the two. And honestly, it seems like there’s the most hope for them getting back together in the future, considering they still care about each other a lot.
Klaine
It seems the biggest early buzz about the episode revolved around Blaine cheating on Kurt. But honestly, don’t you think it fits with his character? He feels completely lost and left behind and he sought comfort in someone who made him feel good. It’s easier for Kurt to avoid temptation in his improbable high-powered job because he’s working all the time. He’s in his element living a fabulous New York life (which does get lonely, trust, but it’s incredibly exciting at first). It was heartbreaking and devastating, sure, because we love them together. But maybe it’s what they needed to make their relationship stronger (in the far, far future). It’s interesting that their relationship status is up in the air, because that’s what happens in real life. People do get past infidelity (or at least work through it), and it’s not always so cut and dry (cheating = breakup). Still, it’s going to be an uphill climb for these two if they do end up staying together.
Brittana
This one seemed to come a little out of the blue, but Santana was right. Long distance relationships are hard. Mike and Tina broke up before they even tried it, and Santana wanted to cut off the pain before it got worse. Honestly, this is the way a lot of relationships go when one person goes off to college. It’s sad, yes, but realistic. But how interesting will it be to see Brittany single at McKinley again? This could be good, Brittana fans. Let’s try to look on the bright side.
Wemma
The relationship status of this couple was also left up in the air, but something tells us they’re the ones that are going to make it. Will was in the wrong to assume Emma would pick up her life and move with him, but his post on the Blue Ribbon Panel is temporary. They can get through it. We’re betting on these guys to make it through.
Kitty and Jake
Let’s be honest, nobody actually cared about this pairing. Was there even a couple name for them? We’ve barely met these people. They did add a little levity to the heavy stuff going on with the veteran cast members, though.
Best song of the night: Can this be a six-way tie? Honestly, everything was gorgeous. But if we’re picking the one that made us FEEL ALL THE THINGS, it was Blaine’s super-sad, live, piano version of “Teenage Dream.” We’re getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
Worst song of the night: There was no worst song. Every tune was performed beautifully and fit the story well. Way to go, “Glee”!

-If you weren’t in love with Darren Criss before, you probably are now. This guy is going places, y’all.
-When Brittania cries, we cry.
-Hey, we’re getting “Grease” songs in a few weeks! “Grease” is fun. Maybe that will cheer us up.
-Rachel’s speech to Finn was absolutely beautiful, but a little too mature for an 18-year-old to compose. No 18-year-old considers themselves a “woman.” But still, it was awesome and we’ll allow it.
